You'd think it was a jazz club, the way it was laid out.
Perhaps it was, perhaps it is, in every way that really doesn't matter.
These might have been the cellars at one time, to one or more - surely, more - of those houses up above. Alternatively, Salomon's might exist in a different space entirely, a separate dimension at right angles to every one of ours.
Whatever: picture a series of smaller rooms knocked through to make one large and massively irregular space broken by pillars of brick, by whole walls left standing apparently at random, by clutters of unmatched furniture, by beer crates and wine boxes in towering stacks. Lights are scattered and curiously placed - and yet, despite the heavy shadows and impossible angles, everywhere in that chaotic space has a clear sight of the stage.
Stage, did I call it? Well, everyone does. In fact it's half a dozen salvaged fire doors, laid over a foundation of more beer crates. It stands right at the centre of the room, the heart of the club, but even so the sightlines shouldn't be so good. They just are: because that's what it's all about, your visit here, this is why you've come.
You may think you're here for the drink, for the craic, for the company. You might have arranged to meet up with this group or that individual. You might tell yourself and Salomon and anyone who'll listen that you only want to sit in a corner and nurse a glass of sorrows for a while.
You're not fooling anyone. Nobody would pay Salomon's prices for anything they could find elsewhere. What brings you here is the lure of the extraordinary. That's not in the setting, though it bends light and space and physical laws to be there; and it's not in the clientele, though in here you meet people - in the loosest possible definition - on terms that do not apply outside.
No. What's truly extraordinary at Salomon's is in the floorshow, on the stage. Eventually.
